BSH HEART FAILURE TRAINEE DAY - 2009
This is a new educational meeting in the BSH meetings calendar for 2009. Based on the new Heart Failure curriculum from the Specialist Advisory Committee of the Royal College of Physicians, this meeting will provide an intensive overview of the core aspects of heart failure from internationally respected speakers. The meeting is primarily aimed at cardiology trainees with an interest in heart failure, although the audience could be expanded to include trainees from other parts of the multidisciplinary team if there is significant demand. The date will be 22 April 2009 and the day will be held at the NHLI/Royal Brompton in London.
BCS ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE (ASC) 2009
This conference will take place in London on 1-3 June 2009. The BSH has submitted a proposal for a number of heart failure focused sessions at this meeting. Further details will be available in due course.

MEETINGS OF OTHER ORGANISATIONS
HEART FAILURE STUDY DAYS (ACPICR in association with BACR)
These one-day study days are aimed at nursing professionals with experience of heart failure patients to increase the awareness of the impact of physical activity and exercise in this patient group. The study day aims to explore the physiological mechanisms relating to heart failure and the application of these principles to the delivery of exercise and physical activity advice, using an evidence-based approach.
The day has both a case study and a practical emphasis and aims to assist health professionals with useful tips and suggestions regarding physical activity and exercise advice for all NYHA status patients, whether seen in the traditional cardiac rehabilitation setting or in their own homes. Knowledge gained will enable safe and effective practice which can be implemented in future service delivery.
Topics delivered include:

Exercise physiology relating to heart failure

Principles of exercise training relating to heart failure

Appropriate physical assessment (home versus programme)

Case study approach to discuss physical activity and exercise management including advice on: type and mode of activity, pacing and energy conservation, monitoring, contraindications/activities to avoid

Practical teaching techniques

Further study days will take place in September, October and November and February 09 on Assessment, Prescription and Delivery of Physical Activity and Exercise in Heart Failure.
