10th BSH ANNUAL AUTUMN MEETING 2007
The BSH Annual Autumn Meeting took place on 23-24 November 2007 in London, focusing on both primary care and advanced heart failure management.
The 10th anniversary of the BSH was celebrated with a dinner on 23 November in the City Inn Westminster Hotel.

BCS ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE 2007

3rd BSH CHARITY BALL 2007
The 3rd BSH Charity Ball was held on Saturday 10 March 2007 at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London.
BSH SESSIONS AT THE BRITISH CARDIOVASCULAR SOCIETY ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE, 24 - 27 APRIL 2006
The BSH held seven sessions focusing on heart failure at the above conference, some stand-alone and some in association with other affiliated groups. The sessions covered some important areas generating much interest.
- Which patients with heart failure should have an ICD? (BSH/HRS joint session)
- Rehabilitation for heart failure. A systematic review (BSH/BACR joint session)
- Key steps in the management of heart failure in primary care (BSH/PCCS, joint session)
- How to plan effective discharge and follow-up of patients with heart failure?

9th BSH ANNUAL AUTUMN MEETING 2006, 24-25 NOVEMBER 2006, LONDON
The Annual Autumn Meeting was held again this year at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London.
The first three sessions in the programme on Friday 24 November focused on heart failure in older patients, with the 4th session focusing on rehabilitation. An outline of the sessions held is as follows:

MEETINGS OF OTHER ORGANISATIONS
OPTIMISING CARE AT THE CARDIO-RENAL INTERFACE
This meeting was held at the Royal College of Physicians, London on 21 September 2009. The aim of the conference was to highlight the important clinical overlap that exists between patients presenting with a primary cardiovascular or renal problem and also to raise awareness and bring together clinicians who are involved in the management of such patients in order to improve patient care.
ROYAL SOCIETY OF MEDICINE - MEETING OF THE TELEMEDICINE & eHEALTH SECTION
This meeting was held at the Royal Society of Medicine in London on Tuesday, 8 September 2009. The programme can be downloaded here.
BEST PRACTICE IN MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION 2009
This meeting took place on June 17 2009 and was for all those with an interest in best practice for patients with myocardial infarction, with updates on the national picture, guidelines, and how best to improve standards.
ATHLETE'S HEART, SUDDEN DEATH AND HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY CONFERENCE
This conference took place in Stanford University, California from June 26-27, 2009. Speakers were invited from all over the United States as well as Europe. Topics discussed were as follows:

ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND BRITISH CARDIOVASCULAR SOCIETY
Device Therapy in Heart Failure
This meeting was held at the Royal College of Physicians, London on Thursday, 30 April, 2009. The programme is available here.
HEART FAILURE STUDY DAYS (ACPICR in association with BACR)
These one-day study days, aimed at nursing professionals with experience of heart failure patients to increase the awareness of the impact of physical activity and exercise in this patient group, took place during 2008. The study day aimed to explore the physiological mechanisms relating to heart failure and the application of these principles to the delivery of exercise and physical activity advice, using an evidence-based approach.
The day had both a case study and a practical emphasis and aimed to assist health professionals with useful tips and suggestions regarding physical activity and exercise advice for all NYHA status patients, whether seen in the traditional cardiac rehabilitation setting or in their own homes. Knowledge gained should help enable safe and effective practice which can be implemented in future service delivery.

Principles of exercise training relating to heart failure

Appropriate physical assessment (home versus programme)

Case study approach to discuss physical activity and exercise management including advice on: type and mode of activity, pacing and energy conservation, monitoring, contraindications/activities to avoid

3rd COMMUNITY ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
The third workshop of the group was held on Friday 7th March 2008 between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. at Wembley Stadium, London.

ROYAL SOCIETY OF MEDICINE and THE BRITISH HYPERTENSION SOCIETY
A conference entitled "Key Advances in the Management of Hypertension" was held at the Royal Society of Medicine on Wednesday 4 July 2007.
The aim of the meeting was to update doctors in secondary care on the most recent advances in the management of hypertension, including rational therapy based on the measurement of renin and algorithms for successful identification of patients with Conn's syndrome.
BRITISH GERIATRICS SOCIETY SPRING MEETING
This meeting was held between 25th - 27th April 2007 at the Brighton Centre,Brighton.

ARRHYTHMIA ALLIANCE REGIONAL MEETINGS
Six regional meetings were held between 19 February and 26 March 2007 to consider developments that have taken place since the launch of the CHD NSF for Arrhythmias and Sudden Cardiac Death and to recognise good practice. These meetings were supported by the Department of Health Heart Team and the Heart Improvement Programme.
ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS - MINAP: from national audit to research
This one day conference was held on Tuesday 27 March 2007 at the Royal College of Physicians, London and was CME accredited.
HEART FAILURE 2007: SOLUTIONS TO DIFFICULT PROBLEMS
This one day meeting was held at the Royal College of Physicians in London on 14 March 2007. The presentations and discussions focused on heart failure in the UK in 2007; ESC & UK guidelines; Healthcare Commission view; Interface issues; Dealing with co-morbidities; What to do when the patient is still symptomatic (drugs and devices).
RCP HEART FAILURE MEETING - 23 MARCH 2006

BRITISH GERIATRIC SOCIETY (BGS) CARDIOVASCULAR SECTION ANNUAL MEETING, 30 JUNE - 1 JULY 2006, LEEDS
The BGS Cardiovascular (CV) Section Annual Meeting comprised a two-day symposium held jointly with the BSH, with separate days devoted to two of the principal challenges in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the ageing population: heart failure and ischaemic heart disease.
The programme offered a lively mix of lectures and interactive debate presented by a nationally and internationally acclaimed faculty.

CARDIO-RENAL MEETING, 6 OCTOBER 2006, LONDON
This one day meeting, bringing together the two specialties of Nephrology and Cardiology, was held at the Royal Zoological Society, Regent's Park, London. The programme covered epidemiology and impact of concomitant chronic kidney disease in patients with cardiovascular disease, underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, controversies in patient management and revascularization in patients with chronic kidney disease.
