Professor John McMurray

Professor of Medical Cardiology, BHF Cardiovascular Research Centre, Glasgow

  • Graduated from Manchester University with a Bsc (Hons) in 1980 and an MB ChB (Hons) in 1983. Awarded a research MD in 1990 for research done at the University of Dundee.
  • Trained in Edinburgh and Glasgow and appointed Consultant Cardiologist in Edinburgh in 1993 before moving to Glasgow in 1995.
  • Current positions: Professor of Medical Cardiology and Deputy Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences at the University of Glasgow.
  • Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow.
  • Was inaugural Eugene Braunwald Scholar in Cardiovascular Disease at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, and visiting Professor of Medicine, Harvard University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, in 2010/2011.
  • Principal investigator, member of the executive committee, steering committee or data monitoring/safety committee for a number of large trials in heart failure, other cardiovascular diseases, renal disease and diabetes.
  • Chair of the event adjudication group at Glasgow University which has served as the endpoint committee for many trials.
  • Past-President of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), chair of the 2012 ESC Heart Failure Guidelines Task-Force, co-chair of the KDIGO anaemia guideline committee, and member of the 2013 ACC/AHA heart failure guideline and the NICE acute heart failure guideline committee. Member of NICE appraisal committee A.
  • Primary research interests include heart failure, coronary heart disease, atrial fibrillation and the cardiovascular consequences of diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Author/editor of ~500 original papers, reviews and book chapters, and 13 books. Member of the editorial board of European Heart Journal (Associate Editor), European Journal of Heart Failure and The New England Journal of Medicine.
