Dr Peter Cowburn

Consultant Cardiologist, Southampton General Hospital

  • My interest in heart failure began in 1995 as a research fellow in Glasgow studying the role of endothelin in patients with chronic HF.
  • I trained as a SpR in the Wessex region before undertaking an 18 month fellowship in advanced HF/ devices in Toronto. I developed an interest in the haemodynamic effects of CRT and reported the first case series of inotrope-supported CRT with excellent outcomes.
  • I was appointed as a consultant cardiologist with a specialist interest in HF at Southampton General Hospital in 2004.
  • I led the introduction of an in-patient heart failure team in 2008 which reduced in-patient mortality from 22% to 6% in its first year.
  • We secured Innovation Funding to set up an ultrafiltration service in 2010 - the first in the UK. Our HF team has continued to grow and in the last 2 years we have taken over the community HF service.
  • I have previously represented the BSH as a Councillor (2005-7) and Deputy Chairman (2007-9).
  • I represented the BSH as a clinical advisor for the NICE CRT guidelines in 2007 and was part of the working group who wrote the UK guidelines for cardiac transplantation in 2011.
  • I was a document reviewer for the European Society of Cardiology Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic heart failure in 2012.
