2017 European events

British Society for Heart Failure

Leading up to European Heart Failure Awareness Day the BSH and the Pumping Marvellous Foundation are teaming up to raise awareness of heart failure in three ways.

  • Cats and Dogs Show
    Chief judge: Paul O'Grady MBE
    Entry: free for your cat or dog
    Deadline for entries: midnight Sunday 23 April 2017
    Winners: announced Friday 5 May 2017
    Prizes:
    Best Cat - one month's supply of Natural Instinct food

    Best Friend - cat-or dog-specific hamper; Pumping Marvellous Foundation's mascot for 12 months
    Rosettes awarded to judge's top five in each category

Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust

Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust Heart Failure Specialist Team are marking Heart Failure Awareness Day.

  • A quiz and information sheet along with their DAILY check, are being handed out to members of the public along with the 'are you heart failure aware' flyers.
  • All patients have also been sent the following text message:

Today is Heart Failure Awareness Day.
Remember the symptoms of fluid retention are:
sudden weight gain, increasing breathlessness and ankle swelling.
Remember to daily weigh and ring the cardiac team if weight increases suddenly

St Thomas' Hospital

The integrated heart failure service from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust held two events for European Heart Failure Awareness Day.

Event for patients, general public, staff
The team held a fair for European heart failure awareness day on 5th May with support from 3DLC, Cardiac rehabilitation, Cardiology Practice Development Nurses, the STH gardening team and St John Ambulance. The event also included a live twitter Q&A on the @GSTTnhs page. A follow-up event will be held at King’s College Hospital in the autumn.

Event for GPs/Practice Nurses
The heart failure team held

  • an education evening for GPs and Practice Nurse on 9th May
  • a Southwark GP protected learning time on breathlessness on 18th May and
  • an education event for community and practice-based pharmacists on 23rd May

Local celebrities Carys Barton and Lynda Blue took part in Pumping Marvellous’ carpool consultation and a team ran a sponsored Clapham Common 10k raising over £1,000 for Pumping Marvellous.

Service updates featured in King’s Health Partners (KHP) newsletters including KHP online, KHP Innovation Impact Stories and local GP bulletins. The service has also received positive coverage on social media and has featured in GST charity ‘About Us’ video promoting new charitable focus for Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity.
