Making heart failure a national priority

We are the voice of heart failure - a UK wide community of healthcare professionals

Our Vision and Mission

Our Vision is a future where heart failure is universally established as a national priority. Heart failure outcomes are transformed through effective prevention, rapid diagnosis and equitable access to optimal care. We are on track to achieve a 25% reduction in avoidable deaths by 2050.

Our Mission is to connect national expertise to improve heart failure outcomes. Our focus is on improving the impact on patients and society. We do this through innovation, education, lobbying, raising awareness and supporting research.

We have identified four areas of strategic focus for the next few years that will help delivery positive change for heart failure

    • Diverse learning opportunities: Build broad education programmes to include a wide range of diverse faculty and speakers ensuring that each segment of our professional community has access to high quality learning resources relevant to their needs.

    • Best practice and standards: Publish and communicate quality standards and develop ways to recognise excellence and innovation in heart failure service delivery and professional practice.

    • Knowledge sharing: Collate and share high quality resources, innovation and expert guidance through our Knowledge Hub to support quality improvement.

    • Quality events: Provide a comprehensive multidisciplinary events programme to share heart failure insight and innovation and foster collaboration across the professional community.

    • Inclusive membership: Build and support an increasingly diverse membership across primary, secondary, tertiary and community care, involving all professional backgrounds, career stages and geographical locations.

    • Enhanced value and connection: Invest in opportunities, resources and systems that increase our membership and enable our members to connect, share and advance as individuals and as a collective body.

    • Regional networks: Continually strengthen our four nations focus by building supported regional networks to foster local connection and support workforce sustainability.

    • Leadership visibility: Actively enable interaction between our members and our leadership, to ensure our members’ needs are central to shaping our organisational strategy.

    • Research pipeline: Cultivate fellowships and mentorship programmes to support professional growth and leadership development in research for all disciplines and career stages.

    • Advancement: Enhance research innovation across the UK by supporting widening participation, recruitment, endorsing and amplifying projects across all stakeholder groups, helping contribute to the heart failure evidence base.

    • Focus on prevention and detection: Proactively collaborate on innovative research opportunities aimed at preventing new cases of heart failure and increase research associated with heart failure case detection and diagnostic pathways for the whole MDT community.

    • Focus on modern priorities: Collaborate with allied organisations and researchers to support efficient, impactful, and collaborative research including AI, digital advances, health inequalities and wider determinants of health.

    • A national priority: Actively work to position heart failure as a national health priority by influencing policymakers, system leaders and funders to embed prevention, early diagnosis and equitable access to high quality and appropriately resourced care across all four nations.

    • System leadership: Establish BSH as an authoritative voice shaping national heart failure policy by providing clear evidence, expert guidance and system‑level insight to inform decisions that drive policy changes to strengthen heart failure pathways and reduce variation.

    • Political and public awareness: Continue to increase understanding of heart failure among decision‑makers, healthcare professionals and the wider public through collaborations, and targeted awareness initiatives that support earlier identification, better outcomes and sustained investment.

    • BSH policy action: Develop clear BSH policy priorities for heart failure (national or regional) and actively drive them forward through focused advocacy, strategic partnerships and consistent engagement with decision‑makers.
